A Great and Excited Tourist Guide to Katora Lake

Katora Lake, in the Kumrat Valley of Pakistan, is a beautiful alpine glacial lake. It can be found in the higher slopes of Jahaz Banda. Due to the stunning landscape and varied topography, it is a favorite location for hikers and trekkers. Whether you’re an expert hiker or just seeking a stunning location to get away from it all, Katora Lake won’t fail to impress.

Katora Lake is surrounded by peaks.

Katora Lake is a glacial alpine lake in the Kumrat Valley of Jahaz Banda in KP Province, Pakistan. The glacial melt provides its source of water and nutrients. Lake Katora, located at an elevation of 11,500 feet, got its name, which means “bowl” in Pashto, because of its unusual bowl shape.

Katora Lake: How to Get There

Wintertime in Katora Lake, with snow-capped mountains in the distance.

You can get to Lake and Jahaz Banda in four different ways:

Consider joining us on a 4-day, 3-night vacation to Katora Lake and Kumrat Valley for just Rs. 14,500 per person.

You can rent a 4×4 Jeep in THAL and drive the rest of the way to Takki Banda.

You can take the bus to Thal, and from there you can switch to a 44 to get to Takki Banda.

TAKKI BANDA also welcomes visitors who arrive on their motorcycles, with plenty of parking available close to the snack bar.

Thall, the valley’s designated starting point for excursions, is the only place where driving is allowed. To get to Jahaz Banda or Kumrat Valley, you can rent a jeep. Parking in Thall is highly recommended.

Jahaz Banda, a camping and lodging area close to Katora Lake

Remember that you will be traveling to a somewhat undiscovered and uninhabited area on this excursion. Hikers, trekkers, and those in search of serenity in the great outdoors will find what they’re looking for at these locations. Because of this, visitors should not have the same high expectations for conveniences and services as they would in more established communities such as Shogran, Naran, Nathiagali, or Murree, all of which have been present for more than 50 years.

The peaceful and beautiful meadows of Jahaz Banda are a great place to spend the night. Tents and wooden rooms are offered for around Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1500 per night, making this an attractive alternative for budget travelers. The next day, for a small cost, you can hire a private guide to show you around if you don’t know your way about it. If you find walking long distances difficult, you can instead book a horse ride to get you closer to the lake for roughly 2000 PKR.

The Katora Lake’s breathtaking scenery will make you forget all your worries and stress.

Jeeps Launch Attack from Thal

You can take one of Thall’s 4WD vehicles or Jeeps to the top of Takki Top, from whence the trail to Jahaz Banda begins. The cost to go from Thall to Takki to Jahaz Banda Meadows and back to Thall for one or two nights is normally between Rs. 12000 and Rs. 14000.

Katora Lake and Kumrat Valley Area Eating Establishments

Art lovers, rejoice! Tollinton Market is a treasure trove of local art and craft. From intricate pottery to vibrant paintings, this market showcases Lahore’s rich artistic heritage. It’s like walking through a living art gallery.

Keep in mind that Kumrat (or Jahaz Banda) is predominantly an outdoor recreation and camping attraction, despite the presence of kitchen shacks and tuck stores in the area. As such, high-end amenities and a large variety of food options are not to be expected. However, the locals will do their best to serve food such as rice, dal, chicken, and other foods. Thank them for their service instead of complaining about the quality of the food or the cleanliness of the facility.

We often tell people going on a trek not to eat any bread the night before they have to do a strenuous 9-hour roundtrip hike to a lake and back the next day. You should bring some light foods with you on your trip, like noodles and dry fruits.

The Climate of Katora Lake

The climate around Katora Lake can change dramatically from one season to the next. Pleasant weather, with mild daytime temperatures and slightly cooler evening lows, is typical during the summer. Still, it’s crucial to always be ready for whatever the weather throws at you.

The lake is blanketed in snow during the winter, making for treacherous hiking conditions and subzero temperatures. Those venturing out in snowy and icy circumstances should be prepared for the elements with the right clothing and equipment. It’s always smart to check the forecast before heading out to the lake, but it’s more important to do so in the winter.

Access to Electricity

There is no power at Jahaz Banda Peak. While solar panels have been installed on some of the outbuildings in the area, their output is limited to LED lighting and cannot charge a drone’s battery or a smartphone. It is recommended to pack power banks and spare batteries if a longer stay is planned. Internet connectivity is unavailable, but phone calls can still be made. You can’t use your phone there because there are no calling signals at Katora Lake (or Kumrat Valley, for that matter).
